Shoulder Arthritis

The shoulder joint is one of the most mobile joints in the human body and is therefore prone to wear and tear. Arthritis leads to inflammation of one or more parts within the shoulder joint. It causes damage to the bones, tendons, muscles as well as ligaments. Shoulder Arthritis can be categorized into five types:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis- It is a result of an auto immune disorder which affects both the shoulder joints at the same time.
  • Post Traumatic Arthritis- This type of Arthritis develops as a result of shoulder injury such as a fracture or dislocation and leads to fluid accumulation within the joint.
  • Rotator Cuff Tear- The rotator cuff is a sheath of ligaments which connect as well as support the humerus and the shoulder blade creating stability in the joint. Damage to these ligaments or surrounding muscles leads to a tear in the rotator cuff.
  • Osteoarthritis- This is the most common form of arthritis caused due to age related wear and tear of the shoulder joint. It is most commonly found in people above 50 years of age
  • Avascular Necrosis- This is a progressive disorder that occurs when the blood supply to upper arm bone (humerus) is severed. The cells and tissues in the joint are destroyed due to lack of blood supply
